What Is Sinusitis?

Sinusitis is a pathology in which the tissue that lines the paranasal sinuses becomes swollen or inflamed.

This inflation occurs as a consequence of an infection that develops due to the presence of viruses, fungi or bacteria.

Inflammation includes the maxillary, ethmoid, frontal, and sphenoid sinuses.

In their healthy state, the paranasal sinuses do not have microorganisms, therefore, the mucus can pass without a problem, and the patient’s breath circulates in them.

Instead, when there is a blockage in the nasal openings; perhaps because of the accumulation of mucus, bacteria can develop, which cause infection or later inflammation, interfering with breathing.

Generally, sinusitis is usually relieved without treatment, although some patients report chronic sinusitis, that is, it lasts for a long time, and may require more extensive treatment.

Types of Sinusitis

Sinusitis is divided into three types depending on how long the disease lasts.

That is, it has a similar symptom picture, but it differs in the time that the condition lasts.

Bearing this in mind, we can highlight three types or levels of Sinusitis:

Acute sinusitis: Acute sinusitis is called when the symptoms appear within four weeks or less.

It can be caused by bacteria, but the infection usually does not occur.

Subacute sinusitis: This type of sinusitis lasts between 1 to 3 months.

Chronic sinusitis: It’s the most serious type of sinusitis. It requires specialised treatments.

The inflammation of the paranasal sinuses extends for more than 3 months.

Patients may suffer from nasal congestion, headache, lack of concentration, and other symptoms.

Symptoms Of Sinusitis

Symptoms may vary depending on the type of sinusitis or how long it’s been going on.

We will highlight the main symptoms of acute (subacute) and chronic sinusitis.

Acute sinusitis

  • Nasal congestion or respiratory distress.
  • Pain in the eye area.
  • Swelling in the face.
  • Stabbing pain in the face or forehead.
  • Runny nose.
  • Dental pain.
  • Fever.

Chronic Sinusitis

  • Sinonasal congestion.
  • Thick, runny nose
  • Facial pain or pressure.
  • Pus in the nasal cavity.
  • Pressure in the ear.
  • Headache.
  • Bad breath.
  • Fever.

Acute sinusitis does not require medical treatment and usually improves in less than 10 days.

However, if the symptoms seem to improve, but then worsen, there is a recurring fever, or there is a history of sinusitis, then a doctor should be consulted.

You should go to the doctor immediately if you have sudden symptoms such as high fever, disorientation, stiff neck, or redness near the eyes.

It can be a serious infection that requires specialised treatments.

How To Cure Sinusitis With Herbal Remedies

The most common treatments for sinusitis include oral antibiotics, anti-allergic drugs and even corticosteroid injections, depending on the type of sinusitis.

Needless to say that each of them comes with its fair share of side effects and contraindications, which makes it advisable to look out for natural alternatives not only to tackle the problem but also not to create new ones.

Below I provide 2 of my best herbal recipes to treat a sinus infection naturally:

For Inhalation:

In a pot of steaming (not boiling) water, add:

  • 10 ml Tea Tree essential oil
  • 10 ml Eucalyptus essential oil
  • 3 ml Peppermint essential oil
  • 3 ml Clove essential oil
  • 2 ml Geranium essential oil
  • 2 ml Thyme essential oil

Place your head over the pot with a towel covering it. Breathe deeply through the nose.

Repeat as necessary. You can also use a steam inhaler to do it.

For Spraying:

In a 2-ounce sinus spray bottle, add:

  • 2 oz saline water
  • 15 drops Echinacea tincture
  • 10 drops of Wild indigo tincture
  • 15 drops Oregon Grape Root tincture
  • 1/2 teaspoon vegetable glycerine

Shake the ingredients well. Spray into the nostrils up to 4 times a day for as long as needed.

Further Recommendations

There are self-care treatments that can help improve the clinical picture.

I would say they are essential during the suffering of acute sinusitis:

Drink a lot of liquid: Consuming enough water can help eliminate the virus naturally.

In addition, it prevents other health problems.

Moisturises the paranasal sinuses: This allows the nose to be uncovered.

It can include inhaling the steam from a bowl of hot water or taking a shower.

Compresses: Placing a hot compress on the forehead or nose reduces nasal pressure and even favours the extraction of mucus.

Nasal wash: Rinsing the nasal passageways with a saline solution can be helpful.

Final Thoughts

Fortunately, there are plenty of successful ways to treat this condition.

In this sense, I can point out that cases of chronic sinusitis together with serious complications are not usual.

Of course, this will depend on the patient avoiding self-medication and going to a healthcare practitioner in time to receive effective treatment.
